Title: Orchard Morning Ripe Red Apples on a Branch
I grew up in northern Michigan right on the lake in an area surrounded by apple, cherry, peach and pear orchards. On a recent visit home I was driving near my family's lake property and saw this orchard full of nearly ripe apples hanging heavy on the trees and without thinking just set up my plein air gear and started painting.
I grabbed some quick studies and a few dozen photos for this painting. After a while the farmer came by and he took me on a little walking tour of the orchard. He knew my family and their orchards also and didn't mind if I came back to paint more. The next day I went to my cousins peach and pear orchards and got even more pics, I'm quite well armed with orchard pics now but it was so cloudy those days I'm not sure if I can use them.
When I got home I narrowed it down to this photo of honey crisps. I used a limited palette of just red, yellow, blue and white, which is my new favorite palette. I like working with just the three colors and white. It keeps things simpler and gives a nice color harmony without even thinking about it. What's not to love about that?
Thanks so much for your interest in my work, Jenny
